Enigma

We looked at the use of enigma in films and how it was used in film, to begin we looked at the connotations that go with enigma and came up with a list:

  • unknown
  • questions
  • curiosity
  • Mystery

We were also asked to define what enigma meant. Mr Lucas showed us a dictionary definition of enigma:

  • A saying, picture, question, etc, which has a hidden meaning
We then had to come up with our own definition:

Enigma is something that is puzzling or hard t work out. It is a mystery that is created by the use of a person, object or question, which true meaning is hidden from the audience, it will be later revealed to the audience and then the enigma will no longer exists.

We then thought about ways in which we could create this enigma:

  • Editing.
  • Sound.
  • Camera shots.
  • Mise-en-scene.
  • Changing the conventions of the narrative.
  • Framing.
  • Not introducing characters until later on.
  • Hidden meanings running throughout the film.
Finally we put all that we had learnt in this lesson and looked at the opening to 'The Bourne Identity'. After watching this it has showed me how to increase the enigma if that is what i wanted to do in my final  task.
